People think that Bucky has poor impulse control, by virtue of being a vet, by virtue of being an alpha shifter, and honestly they may be right. Usually. This, however, where he is standing in a darkened office, waiting for it's usual occupant to return from an evening of difficult group therapy sessions, is not a case of poor impulse control.

Not when Bucky has been planning it for over a month.

He knew, when he first saw Sam across the room at a group session of his own, the first and last time he attempted group therapy at the VA, that two things were true. First of all, he could not continue to see Sam in any professional capacity. The boner he immediately pops is uncomfortable and ill-timed. They're talking about feelings and terror and the difficulty of assimilation in a non-military setting and all Bucky can think of is whether Sam will whimper or groan underneath him.

(He leaves the session early. Let them think whatever they will of that.)

Secondly? Sam will be his mate. It is merely a matter of time.

So he sets out to learn about Sam. Asks around about him, specifically to Natasha, who immediately clocks what it's all about, and to Steve, who doesn't (as per usual). Follows him home. Learns his routine. Learns that he's being courted, by Tony Stark no less, who is predictably phoning it in the whole thing and does not appear to understand just what a catch Sam would be.

Now. Bucky owes Stark a lot. But he's a subpar alpha at best. On the evenings like tonight when Sam would be traveling home solo, a responsible alpha should accompany him once it gets dark. Just in case.

If Tony had a lick of sense, he would come to see Sam home himself. Or send a beta to act as a guard. But Tony has more money than sense, in Bucky's opinion.

Which is why he brings Sam trinkets and flowers and other gifts but doesn't make sure he's safe when he works late.

Bucky is leaning against the desk when Sam opens the door to the darkened office. Smiles in a way that's fully predatory when the omega stalls in the doorway.

"Hello, Sam."
